Breaking the Barrier was founded in Groton, Massachusetts by John Conner, a Spanish teacher who wrote his own textbook because he didn't like the one he was using. That was 1997. What began with a handful of East Coast schools has grown into a full print-and-digital curriculum trusted by schools and homeschool families nationwide — covering Spanish, French, and English, from absolute beginners through AP exam candidates.
The curriculum blends rigorous content with simplicity, clarity, and a student-friendly voice. Grammar and key vocabulary are taught together and systematically — building real skills in reading, writing, and speaking. By the end of the series, students will have practiced every important topic in the language.
Whether your student is starting from zero, picking up a language they studied years ago, or preparing for an AP, SAT II, or placement exam, Breaking the Barrier will help you achieve your language goals.
