Parents can create their own linked account to monitor their student’s progress online. Chapter tests and vocabulary quizzes, included in the package, can be graded easily using the provided answer key and rubric.
Overview:
Designed for total beginners who are ready to immerse themselves into the beautiful language of French, Breaking the French Barrier Beginner “A” presents essential vocabulary, key grammar, and important cultural information from many French-speaking countries and regions. It is the perfect starting point for middle school or introductory high school students.
The STEPS Section:
Students begin their journey with an engaging foundational section covering ten essential building blocks — greetings, family, telling time, numbers, weather, days of the week, home and school vocabulary, and more — that help students begin speaking immediately. Students build confidence from day one!
Core Content Covered:
After the foundational section, students work through chapters that are thematically organized. Most chapters feature a region of the French-speaking world.
Each chapter includes:
- A visually designed cultural map of a part of the French-speaking world
- Vocabulary with interactive flashcards for fun and easy practice
- Clear presentation and explanation of grammar topics with plenty of practice
- Practice activities online with correction feedback and the ability to repeat practice as needed
Key Grammar Topics covered:
- Present tense (regular and irregular verbs)
- Passé composé (past tense)
- Progressive constructions
- Object pronouns (direct and indirect)
- Prepositions
- Adjective agreement and placement
Rappel !
A section in the middle of each chapter called Rappel focuses on concepts presented in earlier chapters, so that students can review prior material as they learn new ideas.
Cultural Content:
Up-to-date cultural information from countries and regions such as France, Belgium, Switzerland, Québec, Senegal, and Morocco is offered at the beginning of each chapter. Through immersive articles, videos, and literary selections, students encounter a variety of French accents from across the French-speaking world.
Online Access enhances learning with:

Why Breaking the Barrier?
Breaking the Barrier has offered language curriculum since 1997 — the books are written by experienced classroom teachers with a time-tested methodology.
Unlike programs focused on vocabulary memorization, students practice the target language across all four skills — reading, writing, listening, and speaking — through a combination of a structured print textbook and a rich Online Access component with audio, video, interactive exercises, and cultural content from the Spanish and French speaking worlds.
This is a full-year, structured course designed for students seeking elective credit.
Do I need to speak French/Spanish as the parent/teacher?
No. The program is fully self-directed — students follow the online activities independently and receive instant, targeted feedback without any teacher input. Parents can assist by offering encouragement and grading the chapter tests using the provided rubric.
What do I need for a second student?
Each additional student needs one extra Student Edition book with Online Access. The Answer Key, Test Program, Vocabulary Quizzes, and Pacing Guide included in the Homeschool Package can be reused across multiple students.
Can I renew Online Access?
Yes. Online Access is valid for 12 months from the date of activation (not purchase). Before your subscription ends, you can renew for an additional full year for $40.
